Whales Today

March 24, 2010 § Leave a comment

I knew something was wrong
when the whales crawled out
of the sea on enlarged muscular
fins and pulled themselves down
empty streets to the 24 hour
convenience store.

One of the whales pressed
an eye to the glass. We were all afraid
for the store clerk. We couldn’t see him.
The whales blocked our view. Police lights
threw red and blue that slid off
the whales’ vinyl backs.

The whale asked the clerk for a gallon
of milk and a copy of some Taiwanese
magazine the clerk never heard of.

Across town, people made toast
with strawberry preserves and listened
to techno on their treadmills.
